Girl Next Door
Julia was the girl next door, fair hair and a beauty to behold
ambitious jealousy her bitter enemy
They came for her in the darkness
claiming the rights of power
and the sign of pious
She screamed for mercy
and begged to differ
Her cries of innocence died upon the deaf ears
as the ludicrous and the folly bore her to post
bearing her to view
The torches waved the night away
carried by the damned to damn
as the prosecution laid to rest
her tears fell to sizzle in the fires
and the bitter smell wafted the air
as flesh seared and charred
yet she never gave in
never once proclaim the fault
The demons prayed to their forgiving god
and he forgave them
just as he opened his arms
to the one they destroyed
The posting the next day I read
"and Julia the witch was burned at the stake
for the marks she bore
and the favors she gave to wickedness"
I alone attended the wake
and truth remained with me
I alone wept the tears
and buried the remains
for the girl next door.
